NEW CIES publication in French: LA GENÈSE DE LA COUPE DES CLUBS CHAMPIONS : Une histoire du football européen (1920-1960) par Philippe Vonnard

Further reaction to the FIFA Master’s number 1 ranking in Europe

The International Centre for Sport Studies (CIES) and the “FIFA Master” (International MA in...

The International Centre for Sport Studies (CIES) and the “FIFA Master” (International MA in Management, Law and Humanities of Sport), academic partners at De Montfort University (UK), SDA Bocconi Business School (Italy) and University of Neuchâtel (Switzerland) were delighted to be ranked as the leading postgraduate sports management course in Europe by SportBusiness International in their May 2012 issue (no 178).

CIES President Bertrand Reeb said, “This result is both a reward and an encouragement. A reward for the team of the CIES and its scientific staff, but also for the scientific directors and teachers of the three partner universities of the “FIFA Master”. It is also an encouragement to continually improve our programmes in response to our competitors.”
This is the first time that a comprehensive assessment of sports management education has been undertaken and the CIES is particularly proud that the work of the “FIFA Master” Scientific Committee, academic teaching team, programme co-ordination team and our course alumni has now been officially recognised.
The SportBusiness International survey recorded that we placed 90% of our “FIFA Master” graduates in permanent employment within three months of graduation.
The “FIFA Master” was also among the courses with the highest international student body reflecting a strong global cultural diversity in comparison to the no 1 ranked Ohio University (80% vs. 10%). The “FIFA Master” was also in the top three internationally for the quality of course teaching and extra-curricular support.
CIES Director Professor Denis Oswald said, “I am pleased that the hard work and dedication of the “FIFA Master” academic and administrative team has been independently recognised with this award. To be ranked as the leading sports management programme in Europe is a wonderful achievement. We are very lucky to have such a talented team working to deliver this complex academic programme. We must also thank FIFA without whom this course would not be possible.”
For FIFA the award was also recognition of their foresight in originally recognising the important bond that exists between sport and education and the need for a professional academic programme.

FIFA General Secretary Mr Jerome Valcke said, “This ranking does not surprise me! As Vice-President of the CIES Foundation Board and Patron of the 11th edition of the “FIFA Master” programme, I can wholeheartedly recommend this Master course to anyone interested in sports management. Here at FIFA, we support the long-term professionalisation of football and sports administration in order to put best practice in place and ensure maximum efficiency in implementing competitions around the globe. So for me, the “FIFA Master” at CIES is THE world-class programme to prepare for exactly this!”
Professor Oswald added, “Finally, but most importantly, I would like to congratulate the work and successes of our alumni who are now working for so many different sporting organisations around the world. They have all helped to make the “FIFA Master” such a global leader in sports business education.”

FIFA President Welcomes CIES Students to Zurich

“These students are the future of sports organisations worldwide” Joseph S. Blatter – April 2012

“These students are the future of sports organisations worldwide” Joseph S. Blatter – April 2012

Friday 27th April 2012 was a day the postgraduates of the International MA in Management, Law and Humanities of Sport (the ‘FIFA Master’) will never forget. Following an early morning departure from the Centre International d’Etude du Sport (CIES) in Neuchâtel, the FIFA Master class, who were joined by the prize winning students from the FIFA/CIES International University Network, arrived at the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) headquarters in Zurich for a prestigious day of educational presentations.
This truly memorable visit began with a very special welcome from the President of FIFA, Mr Joseph S. Blatter. Mr Blatter, who the CIES and students would once again like to thank for his dedication and support to the programme, spoke of the importance of the FIFA Master to the world of sport education and management. Indeed, since the FIFA Master began over ten years ago, between 80 and 90% of the 300 course alumni are now working in various sports sectors across five different continents. Thanks to the support of FIFA, the work of the CIES academic team and university partners, the FIFA Master is now one of the most respected sport management programmes in the world today.
After welcoming the postgraduates and CIES academic staff, the FIFA President moved on to the important task of awarding certificates to the winners of the final project group from the FIFA/CIES International University Network. This special prize was created to acknowledge the best group project developed within the FIFA/CIES International Network in sport management. The network now has twelve universities as partners. The winning project for 2012 was written by Sonia Calvo Herrero and Isabel García Blanco (University King Rey Juan Carlos, Madrid, Spain) on the subject of enumerating and developing tools to reinforce the links between Spanish professional football clubs and their supporters (“Cómo potenciar la relación entre el club de fútbol profesional y su afición?”). The award jury was particularly impressed with the overall academic quality of the work.
In addition, the award jury decided to give a special prize to the work of Ayat Saafin, Yousef Pedersawi, Nael Deguera et Hussein Al-Sheikh (Birzeit University, Ramallh, Palestiner) for their project “Recycling of used tyres to create basic materials for the construction of sports facilities” (“Recycling for Sports”) in recognition of its innovative spirit.
For this ceremony Mr Blatter was joined by the CIES President Mr Bertrand Reeb, the CIES General Secretary Mr Vincent Schatzmann and senior FIFA representatives Mr Christoph Schmidt and Mr Alexander Koch.
The busy morning schedule continued with detailed presentations from Christina Collenberg, Director of HR and Services at FIFA and Jaime Yarza who is a Senior Manager for Futsal, Beach Soccer and International Matches. Following questions from the class it was time for a short break.
The CIES is particularly proud of the number of FIFA Master graduates who are now working in senior positions at FIFA and was delighted that so many former students could join the current class and academic team for a special buffet lunch.
With the 2012 class refreshed and inspired after meeting so many alumni during the break, it was with excitement that the afternoon presentations began with a detailed lecture from David O’Connor from the FIFA Marketing department on Strategy and Brand Management. This was followed by a very informative session by 10th edition graduate Friedrich Martens on the FIFA Early Warning System (EWS) which was set up in 2007 to monitor sports betting at all FIFA tournaments and to help prevent sports betting from having any negative impact on these matches.
The afternoon talks were concluded by Mr Alexander Koch from FIFA Communications and Marketing and a special tour of the Home of FIFA.
The visit had one final treat for the FIFA Master 12th edition class with the opportunity to play a football match on one of the special pitches at FIFA House. The game, which featured the current class against a FIFA combined team, was refereed by Alessandro Pellicciotta from the CIES and eventually finished 3 – 2, with the combined team from FIFA the eventual winners.
Once again, the CIES would like to thank Mr Blatter, FIFA, the various guest speakers and FIFA Master alumni now working at FIFA for making this such a special visit.

The six recipients of the 2011 International University Network prize made their trip to Switzerland last week. The group received their award certificates from the FIFA and CIES Presidents during a special ceremony at the FIFA headquarters in Zurich.

The two winners of the main award, Sonia Herrero Calvo and Isabel Garcia Blanco (Universidad Rey Juan Carlos de Madrid, Spain) and the four winners of the Special Prize, Saafin Ayat, Pedersawi Yousef, and Hussein Ali Nael Deguera (Birzeit University in Ramallah, Palestine), arrived in Switzerland last Tuesday.
After some brief sightseeing, the groups had the opportunity to present their work to the FIFA Master postgraduate students who are currently studying in Neuchâtel for the final sports law module.
Sonia and Isabel presented their project which focuses on strengthening the links between football clubs in the Spanish first division and their supporters. The second project from the four Palestinian students considered how recycled tyres could be used as materials for sport facilities construction. "This is essential in an area where used tyres are as numerous as the flowers in Switzerland ..." exclaimed Ayat in response to one of the many questions posed by students in the audience.
After visiting the headquarters of the CIES, the next destination for the Network students was Zurich. Here they met the FIFA President and listened to lectures on topics such as human resources, marketing, competition, corporate social responsibility and the "Early Warning System” which has recently been developed by FIFA in the fight against match fixing.
The FIFA visit concluded with the traditional football match between the postgraduates of the FIFA Master and a combined team from FIFA itself (result: 3-2 for the FIFA team).
We hope that Sonia, Isabel, Ayat, Yousef, Nael and Hussein enjoyed discovering various facets of Switzerland, CIES and FIFA and above all that they will soon be able to develop their very promising projects.

The International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES) “FIFA Master” placed 90 per cent of the students from its 2008/09 intake in permanent employment within three months of graduation.

In addition, out of the dozens of courses reviewed, the programme was also in the top four with respect to overall student satisfaction.
The FIFA Master was among the courses with the highest international student body reflecting a strong global diversity in comparison to the no 1 ranked Ohio University.
The course maybe the best in Europe but it is not just for Europeans. The SportBusiness ranking quoted a FIFA Master postgraduate: “I would say for non-Europeans the course was a stepping stone to the pan-European market.”
The “FIFA Master” was also in the top 3 for quality of course teaching and extra-curricular support.
SportBusiness asked the question if investing in a course like the FIFA Master is worthwhile? Will Lloyd, founder of GlobalSportsJobs, said: “It really depends on the individual. I’ve given lots of talks to students of these courses over the years and one of the first people I spoke to back in 2003 is now secretary-general of CAF (Confederation of African Football), Hicham El Amrani. Would Hicham have gone from one level of the industry to where he is now without the FIFA Master course? Probably not. So these postgraduate courses do open doors”. He added: “Whereas, for me, the most valuable resource of a postgraduate course like the FIFA Master is the people you meet and the alumni network. That really is something different.”
The SportBusiness International Postgraduate Sports Course Ranking 2012 is the first-ever authoritative assessment of teaching in the sector of postgraduate education catering for the business of sport. The Ranking assessed courses that were Master’s level and above, 100 per cent covering the business of sport, and have been running consecutively for more than three years.
