CIES involved in major sport integrity project

The Sorbonne University, Paris 1, and the International Centre for Sport Integrity (ICSS), in co-operation with UNESCO, have launched a major sport integrity project at a Symposium for experts held in Paris on 11-13 September 2012.

After opening addresses by the Qatar Olympic Committee Secretary General, UNESCO and European Commission Assistant Director Generals, the IOC Director General and the ICSS President, the well-known Italian football player Alessandro del Piero gave an inspiring speech, under the motto “Save the Dream”, to encourage all stakeholders to join in the fight against the integrity threats to sport. Experts attended different workshops:

- Sport Psychology, Ethics & Consequences - Prevention Methods

- Structural Sporting Vulnerabilities, Resistance and Solutions

- Identification, Investigation and Dismantling of Organised Crime in Sport

- Sport Financial Vulnerabilities and Betting Industry Collaboration

- International Legal Instruments and Conventions for Corruption Prevention in Sport

CIES is deeply involved in this major project. Denis Oswald, CIES Director, is a member of the Sorbonne-ICSS Sport Integrity Management Committee. Pierre Cornu, CIES Senior Legal Counsel, gave a presentation during the symposium about “Prosecution techniques & How National and International Barriers can Hinder Sport Prosecution”. In accordance with his background as both a former general prosecutor and a sport lawyer involved in disciplinary proceedings, he is in charge of studies regarding in particular the legal and regulatory framework for sanctioning the manipulation of sport results. He also has a particular interest in the risks related to sport betting, including the detection of illegal betting, the co-operation between public and sport authorities and other specific legal aspects.
