FIFA Master: Highlights of our stay in Milan

Oleksandr Kucheryavy, graduate of the FIFA/CIES Sports Management Programme at the National...

Oleksandr Kucheryavy, graduate of the FIFA/CIES Sports Management Programme at the National University of Physical Education and Sports of Ukraine, was the recipient of the first scholarship awarded by the FIFA International University Network in 2012. He spoke to us about his experiences and impressions of the FIFA Master Programme.

Several weeks ago we completed our three-month residency at the SDA Bocconi School of Management (Milan) where we were able to enhance our knowledge and develop our abilities in the areas of finance, leadership, marketing, planning and event management. It goes without saying that we have very fond memories of our time both inside and outside the classroom... notably our visits to prestigious sporting organisations.

The opportunity to take part in courses at the best management school in Italy was an amazing and unprecedented experience for our group of 30 students. Some of us already had previous professional experience in the field of sports business administration in international organisations and companies. Nevertheless, one great advantage of the module presented by the SDA Bocconi School of Management was that it was conceived in such a way that each and every student was able to deepen his/her knowledge, discover new business practices, and find inspiration in new ideas that will be extremely valuable for his/her future careers.

The courses are not limited only to the academic side of management, participating in group projects or… taking examinations. We also had the opportunity to visit the most important sports-related organisations in Italy, and to actively exchange ideas with their representatives. The list is quite impressive: Inter FC, AC Milan, International Tennis Federation (ITF), Major League Soccer (MLS), IMG, Juventus, Sky, Ferrari, Vero Volley, Lega Calcio, Interbrand, RCS Sport, Opta, EXPO Milan, AEG and Infront. Suffice to say that on a personal level, each of us benefited greatly from the discussions during meetings with these professionals, and we are convinced that we can put this knowledge to good use in mid and long-term projects.

Our stay in Milan also helped us to more fully understand the importance of two specific aspects of the FIFA Master, which were brought to our attention by the professors and many former students.

The first aspect is the length of time needed to earn a FIFA Master. When we first submitted our applications for this programme the nearly one year of studies seemed like a very long time… Eleven months represented a large chunk of our lives. In reality, however, time simply flew by because of the intense nature of the scholastic programme, the diversity and cultural opportunities that we experienced after having changed universities and countries three times, in addition to the positive competitive spirit within our group of carefully chosen students with so many common interests. It was all over too soon. Several months ago we started courses at Leicester, and today, the Scientific Committee is finalising the selection of students who will have the good fortune and the pleasure of participating in the next edition of the best sports management programme in Europe! Yes, time really does have wings….

The second aspect touches on the enormous added value that the “ FIFA Master " network provides, its vision and international dimensions. Students are immersed in the world of sports on a daily basis and are given direct access to different kinds of sports and businesses. They are exposed to all the related fields and learn to understand the realities of different countries. Taken together, the guest speakers, the official and informal debates, the exchanges of views with participants in other sports management programmes, the dinners, the football matches between colleagues - all this contributed significantly to enriching of our lives.

In concrete terms, the world of sports is welcoming FIFA Masters students with open arms. After just twelve years, a network of former students now extends right across the continents. Alumni are active in numerous bodies, organisations and premier sports companies, whether in international organisations, national federations, clubs, or private companies.

Just three months to go now until we present our final projects and take part in the graduation ceremony … In July, the latest batch of graduates of the FIFA Masters programme will go out into the world to face their personal and professional challenges. But they will never lose sight of one common objective: to further strengthen the FIFA Master family in a spirit of friendship and excellence, and all for the greater good of sports.

Interview of Vincent Schatzmann, CIES General Secretary

Can you first tell us about yourself and your career path?
I’m a married lawyer, born in Lausanne...

Can you first tell us about yourself and your career path?

I’m a married lawyer, born in Lausanne in 1980. I graduated with a Master in Law from the University of Neuchâtel, completed with an LL.M in European law and in International Economic law. I also hold a Sport Management diploma. I started my career at CIES as legal counsel and I became General Secretary in 2009.

What links do you have with the sport world?

Since I was young I have competed in sport. I am especially interested in skiing and football. I was on the ski slopes at 4 years old in the Wallis mountains where I also regularly entered skiing competitions. Between 20 and 26 years old I became further involved in the ski world as a ski instructor and ski coach with young Swiss racers. Even now during my days off, I still help out at the Anzère ski school (Wallis, Switzerland) as ski instructor and in the promotion of the ATOMIC ski brand.

Who is your favourite sportsman and why?

Of course, like all children during my youth I had many heroes such as Pirmin Zurbriggen and Ruud Gullit. But today, to be honest, I haven’t a favourite sportman. I now have more admiration for sportsmen such as Roger Federer and Didier Cuche for the regularity of their performances and the self discipline they have shown every day to remain at the very top of their sport. These are examples of modest and talented hard workers who fix an objective and keep it until they achieve it.

What are the CIES’s special areas of expertise?

The CIES aims to develop
activities, top-level
programmes and
services to overcome the challenges of today’s sports world. Our research, education and consulting activities have been developed with a multi-disciplinary approach. Indeed, law, sociology, geography, history and management are all represented.

What are some of the key examples of your activities?

An example from our education portfolio is the FIFA Master course, which was recently named for the second consecutive year, the leading postgraduate sports management course in Europe by an independent sports industry survey. Organised by the CIES in partnership with three universities - De Montfort University in Leicester (England), SDA Bocconi School of Management in Milan (Italy) and the University of Neuchâtel (Switzerland) - the FIFA Master in Management, Law and Humanities of Sport is an intensive 10 month postgraduate programme developing all-round managers who can cope with the increasingly complex world of sport.

In collaboration with FIFA, the CIES has also developed an academic network named the FIFA/CIES International University Network, which offers local programmes in sport management to students studying at partner universities around the world. These continuing education sport management courses are available in Central America, South America, Africa, Europe and the Middle East. Each programme covers the key areas of sport management such as law, event management, communication, finance, marketing and sponsorship.

We also have the CIES Sports Observatory which is a dedicated group of experts specialised in the statistical analysis of sport. Its aim is to provide top level services for sports governing bodies in the areas of questionnaire surveys, databases, data mining, business intelligence and reporting.

How does CIES concretely impact the sport industry?

With over 90% of our FIFA Master graduates now working in the sports world including the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), International Olympic Committee (IOC), Asian Football Confederation (AFC), Fédération Internationale de Basketball Amateur (FIBA), Sauber Formula 1 Team, Mastercard, ESPN; Adidas and IMG, the impact of the FIFA Master reaches across all continents and all sports.

The highly regarded work of the CIES Sports Observatory also has a direct impact on the sports industry. For example, we produce a range of reports on the European Football market which are illustrated with unique graphics, maps, rankings, statistical models and detailed academic analysis. These reports can help to inform managers about potential strategies, squad stability and club experience. Federations at a national and international level can also use the reports to identify and make policy decisions supported by accurate data.

What are the long-term aims of the CIES?

Our aims are multiple. Firstly, we are continuing to work hard to become one of the leading institutions for research and education within the sports industry. For example, we are further developing and adapting our training and “work placement” programmes in the context of increased competition and growing demand. Secondly, we plan to increase the impact and profile of our scientific research with new and dynamic publications, seminars and events. Finally, we will continue to strengthen and expand our existing expertise in continuous education opportunities and seminars for sports professionals.

Official reactions to the FIFA Master’s number 1 ranking in Europe in 2013

The International Centre for Sport Studies (CIES), FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football...

The International Centre for Sport Studies (CIES), FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) and the “FIFA Master” (International Master in Management, Law and Humanities of Sport), academic partners at De Montfort University (UK), SDA Bocconi Business School (Italy) and University of Neuchâtel (Switzerland) were delighted to be ranked as the leading postgraduate sports management course in Europe by SportBusiness International for the second consecutive year in their May 2013 issue (no 189).

The FIFA Master, which was also named the second best programme in the world by the SportBusiness International 2013 rankings, scored highly in the categories of student satisfaction and the employability of its alumni to beat entries from the UK, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Switzerland.

FIFA General Secretary Mr Jerome Valcke said: “To top these rankings for a second year in a row is a truly magnificent achievement and underlines FIFA’s commitment to develop the game of football across the world, by supporting professionalisation and improving standards in sports administration. I would like to congratulate everyone at CIES for their hard work in developing and consistently delivering a truly world-class “FIFA Master” programme which attracts students of the highest calibre. FIFA and CIES will continue to work together to ensure this Master course remains the best in its field.”

Dino Ruta, Scientific Director at the SDA Bocconi School of Management commented: “The FIFA Master is a top programme because of its uniqueness in the integration of Management, Humanities and Law perspectives. The management module is designed for future leaders in sport that must be capable of blending an in-depth understanding of today's economic situation with a coherent cultural vision for tomorrow. Milano's creative atmosphere, combined with the pragmatic academic legacy of the SDA Bocconi School of Management, provide a unique blend in the moulding of tomorrow's leaders.”

Tony Collins, of DMU's International Centre for Sports History and Culture, added: "It's a fantastic honour for everyone at De Montfort University and it's a tribute to everyone involved here, in Switzerland and Italy.”

He continued: “Our part of the course focuses on the humanities and ethics of sport, and we teach the cultural impact of sport, and look at controversies in games - so there's plenty to talk about!”

“To be ranked as the leading sports management programme in Europe, twice in a row, is a wonderful achievement.” said Vincent Schatzmann, general secretary of the CIES. “This result is both a reward and an encouragement. A reward for the team of the CIES and its scientific staff, but also for the teachers of the three partner universities of the FIFA Master - De Montfort University in Leicester, SDA Bocconi School of Management in Milan and the University of Neuchâtel.”

He added: “We would also like to congratulate the work and successes of our alumni who are now working for so many different sporting organisations around the world. They have all helped to make the FIFA Master such a global leader in sports business education. Finally, we must also thank FIFA, as without whom this course would not be possible.”

Founded in 2000 by FIFA and the CIES in Neuchâtel, the International Master in Management, Law and Humanities of Sport ("FIFA Master") is a postgraduate course dedicated to all sports (and not only football), which now serves as a benchmark for the training of sports administrators.

During the first twelve editions of the programme, more than 350 graduates from over 80 countries have attended the one-year university course which is jointly delivered by De Montfort University in Leicester (England), SDA Bocconi School of Management in Milan (Italy) and the University of Neuchâtel (Switzerland).

Today, more than 90% of our students work in the sports industry, including for example, FIFA, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and the European Rugby Cup (ERC).

The CIES Football Observatory is pleased to inform you that the latest issue of the Big-5 Weekly Post is now available to download for free
. This issue presents the most productive players in the big-5 leagues during April.

Thanks to the data provided by Opta Pro, our analysis concerns five key areas of the game: shooting, chance creation, take on, distribution, and recovery. The general index is the weighted sum of all these specific indicators. In April, the most productive players overall were:

Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool FC) in England

Alexis Sánchez (FC Barcelona) in Spain

Rémy Cabella (Montpellier HSC) in France

Claudio Pizarro (FC Bayern München) in Germany

Fabrizio Miccoli (Palermo US) in Italy

Some players from middle or bottom ranked clubs also performed particularly well in specific areas of the game. For example, Andros Townsend (Queens Park Rangers FC) was the most productive player in take on for England and Thiago Xavier (ES Troyes) is at the top of the table in recovery in France.

The CIES Football Observatory academic team is at your disposal for more information.

About the CIES Football Observatory
