The President of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation has the floor

Former student of the FIFA/CIES Programme organised by Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi (SUAD), Yasser...

Former student of the FIFA/CIES Programme organised by Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi (SUAD), Yasser Al Misehal, has held different positions in national and international football. Now President of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF), here he talks about some key moments in his career, the role that education has played in his professional career development and the challenges facing Saudi football.
To begin, tell us about your duties and your links with football
I completed a bachelor's degree in finance (with Honors) at the King Fahad University of Petroleum and Minerals, a well-known University in the Middle East. It is located in Dhahran, a city of about 120,000 inhabitants in Eastern Saudi Arabia.
However, my passion for football goes back to childhood. Since I was a child, I have been an avid fan of this sport. Over the years, I have been able to build a platform to this craze, notably by working as a volunteer for Al Ettifaq Club, which was founded in 1944, of which I later became an honorary member.
This volunteering commitment has turned into a career which has been marked by various stages, each one more enriching than the last. Indeed, I have had the pleasure and the honour of serving in various positions within Saudi and international football: member of the AFC Professional Clubs Committee (2011-2014), member of the AFC Disciplinary and Ethics Committee since 2015, CEO of the Saudi Professional League (2013-2016) and then President of this organisation (2017-2018), not forgetting my appointment as a member of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee in 2017.
Finally, three years ago, I was elected Vice-President of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation, of which I am now President.
Why did you decide to participate in the FIFA/CIES Programme organised by the Sorbonne Abu Dhabi (SUAD)?
In today's world, sport is confronted with an increasing number of challenges. Every day, the environment of sport - and that of football in particular – grows more complex. It is therefore necessary to be able to analyse and manage difficult situations. For me, there is no doubt that training is a key element in tackling this inflation of challenges. Furthermore, as I love football, I was keen to follow a course which would develop my managerial skills while I was CEO of the Saudi Professional League. Therefore, I decided to follow the FIFA/CIES Programme proposed by SUAD.
Has this Programme been useful for your professional life?
Yes, for sure! This Programme covers all the general aspects of management. In concrete terms, it has enabled me to improve my knowledge in the fields of sports management and football administration, while providing me with personal career growth, practical insights and knowledge. All this ultimately contributed to the journey that led to my election as President of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) in June 2019.
What are the main challenges facing football, and by extension sport in Saudi Arabia?
Every football association faces its own particular set of challenges and, of course, SAFF is no different in this regard. However, in my view, the main challenges which we face today are tied to the exciting and historic moment at which Saudi football now finds itself, with initiatives in place to drive greater footballing development than we have ever seen before. These initiatives will naturally encounter some obstacles along the way, which will require our focus and determination, but above all should be viewed in terms of the opportunities which they promise.
There are a number of areas where we at SAFF have identified real capacity for growth and expansion. Firstly, we are seeking to increase the number of certified Saudi coaches which, at the moment, is quite limited compared to the population of the country. The same is true for high quality football academies, whose number we are working to boost so as to deliver the maximum possible positive impact for grassroots players across our Kingdom. Other areas we have identified for improvement are establishing a presence of Saudi professional footballers in the major international leagues, especially in Europe, as well as significantly increasing the number of Saudi national referees who officiate in the matches of our premier league. In a nutshell, despite the fact that Saudi Arabia has been crowned AFC Asian Cup champion three times, participated in five FIFA World Cups and three Olympic Games, we feel that our current place in the FIFA rankings does not reflect our historical achievements and are determined to remedy this.
Is education, therefore, an instrument to better address the challenges in question?
Absolutely. Education and training form the backbone of a strong and inspired nation, especially if it has dynamic and talented individuals. As I have previously mentioned, sport faces many challenges. Education, therefore, provides a platform for solutions and also case studies we need to address these challenges.
What are the three most important sporting moments for you?
My choices are not too difficult to make. The first is Saudi Arabia's victory in the Asian Cup in 1984. I was ten years old at the time. It was this success that pushed me towards football. Then, Saudi Arabia's qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia. I was then vice-president of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation. Finally, our qualification for the Olympic Games in Tokyo. I attended this event in person, in Thailand. It was our first major achievement since the appointment of the new Executive Committee of the Federation - of which I am President - in 2019.
Where do you see yourself in 20 years’ time?
I would like to be among the key stakeholders in Saudi football. Indeed, my wish is to play a major role in the development of this sport, so that Saudi Arabia becomes the country of football, the best and most respected in the world.

Other well-known footballers are high in the rankings such as Bruno Fernandes, Romelu Lukaku and Raphaël Varane. If we consider the number of matches played, the Danish full international Christian Eriksen tops the table with 54 games. However, in terms of minutes, the Inter player is not even in the first 1,000 ranks. On average, he played just over a half time per match.
With regard to goalkeepers, at the head of the table is Marcelo Lomba from SC Internacional: 4’740 minutes in 52 official matches.
FIFA MASTER ALUMNI - WHERE ARE THEY NOW? - BUGRA CEM IMAMOGULLARI

Bugra Cem Imamogullari
Current Position: Head of International Relations and Events at the Turkish...

Bugra Cem Imamogullari
Current Position: Head of International Relations and Events at the Turkish Football Federation (TFF)
Year of graduation: 2016 (16th Edition)
Nationality: Turkish
What does your current role involve?
Working for Turkish Football is very exciting. Turkey loves football and our nation lives and breathes the game every single day. This is what makes this job so dynamic and motivating.
Regarding my role, I am leading the department which has two main functions: International Relations and International Events.
On the International Relations side, we are the primary contact for all international stakeholders, such as FIFA, UEFA and other national football associations as well as other international non-governmental organisations. We share and distribute the latest developments in the international football world with the relevant departments in the TFF organisation, as well as reaching to the international stakeholders related to any requests or need from the TFF.
In addition to that, we also supervise the coordination of funding and capacity building programmes which are run by international governing bodies like FIFA, UEFA, on behalf of TFF.
The International Events side is more focused on the operational side of the workload as we are onsite and running the events. Primarily, the organisation of all international games which Turkish national team is involved in is under the responsibility of my department. We are also in charge of the international Events hosted by International Football Organisations. The 2013 FIFA U20 World Cup, 2009 UEFA Cup, 2012 UEFA Congress and 2019 UEFA Super Cup are some of the main events that I have worked in the past.
Currently, we are working on the 2021 UEFA Champions League Final, which was initially planned for Spring 2020 but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is now postponed to 29 May 2021.
Work is challenging most of the time, hence I am lucky enough to work with a good management above me and an experienced team works with me.
Which aspects of the FIFA Master course have helped you most in your career?
The FIFA Master has been extremely important in my career, first because it has a great reputation in the industry. However, its importance is not limited to that, the knowledge that I have gained during the course also continues to support me throughout my career.
When I applied for the FIFA Master, I had two main goals. One was to build friendships within the industry which would later become collaborations and partnerships. And secondly, to have a visible role in the international sports landscape with the help of the program. Both these expectations were fulfilled so far.
What advice would you give to future students on the course?
What I would advise to current students is to learn as much as they can and establish strong friendships during their FIFA Master adventure.

FIFA Master - International Master in Management, Law and Humanities of Sport, ranked No.1 Course in Europe 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 by the SportBusiness International global rankings.
Organised by CIES in partnership with De Montfort University (United Kingdom), SDA Bocconi School of Management (Italy) and the University of Neuchâtel (Switzerland).

As of 1st October 2020 the International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES) has officially opened the application process for the 22nd edition (2021-2022) of the FIFA Master.

Team Spirit Grows in Leicester for FIFA Master 21st Edition Class

As the dust settles on another month as FIFA Masters students, the Humanities of Sport module in...

As the dust settles on another month as FIFA Masters students, the Humanities of Sport module in Leicester continues to expand our knowledge of sports history and has provided us with a better understanding of both the incredible impact of sport on the world in the past, and also how and why it operates at the present time.
The current sub-module titled the ‘Internationalisation of Sport’ has been headed by none other than our very own Prof. Pierre Lanfranchi, and has been quite an eclectic one for us all. He took us across all continents, and various countries specifically, and not only explored how cultural norms dictated the sporting environment, but also the impact of this on the broader state of sporting affairs within that particular region. It has no doubt started to make the class think a lot more critically about historical events that have unquestionably shaped the ways in which sports in general are presently structured.
Moreover, the classes wouldn’t have been nearly as interesting had they not been taught by quality academics and professionals who have clearly been deeply inspired by their work, which has in turn been reflected in the engagement showed throughout their lectures. From topics such as Football Trafficking and what UNICEF can do to tackle the issue taught by Dr. Serhat Yilmaz, to Sports in Iceland by Professor Vidar Halldorsson, and discussing the critical issues pertaining to Human Rights and what FIFA is actively doing in this area with Andreas Graff, just to name a few, we can see how no two lectures were ever the same. This is what the FIFA Masters is all about and what motivates us as students to get out of bed in the morning, click the Zoom lecture link or walk over to our classroom, and engage with the brilliant minds such as these.
Despite the pandemic, the dedicated efforts shown by both Module Coordinator James Panter and Professor Pierre Lanfranchi cannot go unnoticed here and the class would like to publicly thank them for putting together such a diverse, wide-ranging and thought-provoking sub-module for everyone to enjoy.
Regarding these two key figures, and of course Professor Martin Polley (we didn’t forget you don’t worry!), they’ve continually expressed the importance of the class having the crucial benefit of being together regardless of the pandemic situation currently affecting the world. As a result, time away from the classroom has been nothing short of exciting as each and every member of our class brings elements of their home culture and customs for the group to enjoy. From celebrating Halloween, to Diwali - the festival of lights - and finishing up the month with a delicious Turkey dinner for Thanksgiving last Thursday, we have been blessed to live these moments together, creating memories that will no doubt solidify the bond we have as a class.
This aspect of the FIFA Master has been deemed an essential one, and rightly so. Nevertheless, and quite luckily, with everything we have lived through together, nothing can now prevent us from being a team!

Good luck to Shirley Cruz, alumnus of the FIFA/CIES Executive Programme in Sport Management organised in partnership with the Universidad de Costa Rica, who has been nominated for the FIFA Puskás Award 2020 for the best goal of the year.
Shirley has been shortlisted along with ten other players for this prestigious award that will be presented on 17 December as part of the Best FIFA Football Awards™ 2020.

Haaland and Reyna transfer values skyrocket

Issue number 315 of the Weekly Post highlights the big-5 league players whose transfer value has...

Issue number 315 of the
highlights the big-5 league players whose transfer value has increased the most in November according to the CIES Football Observatory
. The Norwegian prodigy Erling Haaland tops the table for footballers with a transfer valuation of more than €80M: €155M compared to €120M at the end of October (+€35M).
If the reported €75M release clause valid from 2022 really exists, Borussia Dortmund will be certainly tempted to transfer him at a much higher price at the end of the current season. If
continues to score so many goals and perform at such a great level, once the COVID-19 pandemic is over, he could break the €222M transfer fee record currently held by Neymar.
The top increases in November for the other price ranges considered were measured for <link http://ns9t.mjt.lu/lnk/EAAAAT8QaEMAAcrHlfwAAGbBfAQAARpaqU8AAAAAAAmHyQBfxLGOOxIsFUEiSSyI9sfU1OR8SAAF2To/4/JgX741pPLio0cjTP_hgrBw/aHR0cHM6Ly9mb290YmFsbC1vYnNlcnZhdG9yeS5jb20vLXByb2ZpbGUtMTcxODkwLV9ub25l>Giovanni Reyna
(+€34M) for players with an estimated value between €40 and €80M, <link http://ns9t.mjt.lu/lnk/EAAAAT8QaEMAAcrHlfwAAGbBfAQAARpaqU8AAAAAAAmHyQBfxLGOOxIsFUEiSSyI9sfU1OR8SAAF2To/5/Nh7ow_XgsZ-SCJCRaeU2LA/aHR0cHM6Ly9mb290YmFsbC1vYnNlcnZhdG9yeS5jb20vLXByb2ZpbGUtMTgxNjUwLV9ub25l>Florian Wirtz
(+€16M) for the €20 to €40M category, Nicólas González (+€7M) for footballers valued between €10M and €20 M and Yunus Musah (+€4.5M) for players whose current transfer value is still below €10M. The updated estimated value ranges for all big-5 league players is
.
