Cricket and Rugby Union Visits for 12th edition CIES/FIFA Master Postgraduates

On Monday 7th November 2011, the CIES/FIFA Master Humanities of Sport field visit programme concluded with a busy day of visits in London. During the morning the 29 postgraduates of the 2011/12 edition class had the opportunity to visit the “Home of Cricket” at Lord’s cricket ground. Often described as the “spiritual headquarters” of cricket, the postgraduates were able to learn more about the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), which was founded in 1787, and the history of one of the most famous sporting venues in the world. The class also had the chance to meet with 4th edition alumni, Rachel Dickson, who now works for the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). The morning finished with visits to the iconic Lord’s Media Centre, Long Room and players’ Dressing Rooms.

In the afternoon the postgraduates continued their day in London with a trip to Twickenham, the home of English rugby union. A tour of the 82,000 seat stadium, which is the largest dedicated rugby union venue in the world, was followed by a presentation from the World Rugby Museum Head Curator on the history of the Rugby Football Union (RFU) and its more recent development. The postgraduates next explored the World Rugby Museum and its impressive collection of rugby artefacts.

The Humanities of Sport module course team, based at the International Centre for Sports History and Culture, De Montfort University, and the 12th edition class of the CIES/FIFA International MA would like to take this opportunity to thank both Lord’s, the ECB and Twickenham for a very enjoyable day of visits.

Applications for the 13th Edition (2012-2013) of the FIFA Master are open until midday (12pm) Central European Time on Friday 20th January 2012 and must be completed on the CIES online application form. For inscription or any other information: www.cies.ch
