The International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES) was deeply shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden death of Patrick Baumann who has died while attending the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Buenos Aires.
Patrick Baumann, 51, Secretary General of FIBA, was a major figure in the world of international sport. He was a member of the IOC, President of the Organising Committee for the 2020 Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne, and President of GAIFS (Global Organisation of International Sport Federations).
A lawyer by training, he was an effective, multilingual and dynamic visionary. His qualities had a hugely positive impact on the many tasks performed within the senior administration of the sport. A few years ago, Patrick Baumann agreed to join the CIES Foundation Board to share his experience and knowledge of the world of sport with us. His contribution to the functioning of our institution has been considerable.
We are grateful to him and extend our sincere condolences to his family at this extremely painful time.
