Tokyo Olympic Gold Medal for FIFA Master 15th Edition Graduate Emma Twigg!

The FIFA Master Scientific Committee, partner universities, FMA Alumni Association and everybody connected with the course would like to send their sincere congratulations to 15th edition graduate, Emma Twigg, who has secured an Olympic Gold medal in the final of the Women’s Single Sculls event held at the Sea Forest Waterway in central Tokyo.

Emma, who is part of the New Zealand Olympic Team and is a former Rowing World Champion, was competing at her fourth Olympic Games, having previously raced at Beijing 2008 (ninth place), London 2012 (fourth place) and Rio 2016 (fourth place).

Continuing the dominant form she had demonstrated throughout the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games heats, quarter-final and semi-final, she led the final race from start to finish, staying well ahead of the challenges made by Hanna Prakatsen from Russia and Magdalena Lobnig from Austria. She also recorded a new Olympic record time of 7m 13.97s in the process as she powered across the finishing line for Olympic glory!

Speaking to Sky Sport after the race she said, “I can’t believe it. Honestly, crossing the line it was disbelief.”

Emma combined her 2014/15 FIFA Master course studies while training for the 2016 Rio Olympics and has continued to work incredibly hard since then in the pursuit of her Olympic dream. Nobody deserves this victory more than her. Speaking later she said, “All these years, many, many disappointments. I can’t thank the people I have surrounded myself with enough. They got me here. That’s not my result, it’s my team”.

Reflecting on her time on the FIFA Master in an interview with De Montfort University just before she made the journey to Tokyo ready for the Games to begin, she said, “The whole experience really opened my eyes to different cultures. We all keep in touch even now. It’s a pretty unique experience.”
