CIES and DENTSU Co-host their Fourth Seminar in Tokyo, Japan

In June, CIES and DENTSU hosted their fourth joint seminar on the theme of Asian Sports Management at the DENTSU Hall in Tokyo. The latest event in this highly successful series had the title “A Vision and Strategy for Asia to Challenge the World” and, for the first time, considered topics beyond only football. Once again, the event attracted large numbers of delegates from a diverse range of backgrounds, including academics, consultants, government officers and university students.

A prestigious programme of guest speakers from various areas of global sport gave delegates the benefit of their thoughts and ideas for the future of sport in the Asia region. This year, speakers included the founder and CEO of Sports marketing company, Oceans Sports and Entertainment Marketing Ltd. in China, Mr Shoto Shu. Mr Shu is also a CIES alumni having previously completed the International MA in Management, Law and Humanities of Sport ('FIFA Master' course). He was joined by the first ever South Korean MLB player, Chan-Ho Park, and the current head coach of the England Rugby Union team, Eddie Jones. Mr Jones was able to provide a unique insight into Asian sport as the former Head Coach of the Japan Rugby Union team at the 2015 Rugby World Cup. All were invited to give their own perspectives and future strategies for sports management in Asia.

Proceedings began with DENTSU General Manager Mr. Yoshihiro Oi discussing the current trends and realities within Asian football business today and reflecting on his own extensive experience in the area. He was followed by Mr. Shu who spoke about his experiences and business activity in what is a drastically changing Chinese sports industry. Discussions included how sports businesses in Asia over the past five years has dramatically changed and to what extent managers have been able to plan for these changes. Mr. Park next joined a question and answer session on his success as a player and his philosophy for challenging in different sporting environments. The seminar concluded with a fascinating session by Mr. Eddie Jones who discussed his time with the Japan national rugby team, which included their famous victory over South Africa at the 2015 Rugby World Cup, and his current work with the England Rugby Union team as they build for the 2019 Rugby World Cup which will be held in Japan.

Once again the joint CIES and DENTSU event proved to be a highly successful and informative day for all delegates.
