CIES signs a partnership agreement in Poland

The International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES) signed a partnership agreement with PL.2012+ (company in charge of managing the National Stadium ‘Narodowy Stadium’) and Kozminski University (KU) in Warsaw on 29 April.

After fruitful discussions, PL.2012+, KU and CIES signed a partnership agreement with a view to organising the FIFA/CIES Programme in sport management. The aim, among other objectives, is to contribute to the legacy of EURO 2012 by training competent sports and events organisers for the sport of today and of the future. The Programme will allow students from Poland to acquire fundamental tools in the field of sport management (law, management, communication, sport event management, marketing, sponsorship and finance). It will also offer participants the opportunity to attend conferences given by international experts on various aspects of modern sport.

During the signature ceremony, CIES President Bertrand Reeb said: “This is the first time that CIES is signing a partnership agreement in a Central European country and we are pleased to do this in Poland, a country with a great sporting tradition. There is a long list of prestigious Polish athletes. To name but a few, Adam Malysz, Zbigniew Boniek, Kazimierz Deyna, Grzegorz Lato, Irena Szewinska, Robert Korzeniowski and Jerzy Dudek.”

For her part, Sylwia Halas, Executive Education and Development Director at the academic partner KU, commented: “The Programme in sport management will offer new opportunities in the higher education curriculum. In particular, it will help participating students achieve goals through the five main management functions (planning, organising, staffing, leading and controlling).”

Finally, Mikolaj Piotrowski, PL.2012+ spokesman and Communication/Promotion Director, added: “For us, nothing is impossible. Our objective is to surprise others. When the National Stadium was built, everyone thought that it would host only football matches. We have proved the contrary. In 2013, the stadium hosted over 200 sports, commercial and entertainment events which attracted over 1,300,000 visitors. We are now taking another step by creating a training department. For that purpose, PL.2012+ and Kozminski University are proud to announce the organisation of the FIFA/CIES Programme in sport management. This curriculum will foster an innovative approach in the way sports organisations are managed, in particular national federations and clubs. The know-how made available to us by CIES is priceless. On our end, we will be using the services of the top Polish specialists, in particular those who organised the UEFA EURO 2012. We have no doubt that thanks to this wealth of experience and knowledge, along with the synergies that we will exploit, we will be able to offer something unique in Central and Eastern Europe.”

Kozminski University is the fifteenth university to join the FIFA/CIES International University Network which already has academic partners in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Egypt, Lebanon, Palestine, Peru, Senegal, South Africa, Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, the United Arab Emirates and Venezuela.

The first edition of the Programme organised by KU will start in autumn 2014.
