CIES/FIFA Master Executive Board Welcomes 12th Edition Postgraduates to England

On Tuesday 20th September 2011 the CIES/FIFA Master Executive Board welcomed the CIES/FIFA Master 12th Edition postgraduates to De Montfort University, Leicester, England, for the start of the 2011-12 programme. A special welcome event was held at De Montfort University’s Trinity Chapel. The day included presentations from the CIES President, Mr Bertrand Reeb, the CIES Director and International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Committee member, Professor Denis Oswald and also from the three CIES/FIFA Master partner university Scientific Directors at De Montfort University, SDA Bocconi School of Management and Université de Neuchâtel.

Following a series of dedicated induction and enrolment sessions from the programme administration team, the 29 international postgraduates of the 12th edition will now start an intensive Humanities of Sport teaching programme led by academics from the International Centre for Sports History and Culture at De Montfort University. In addition to lectures and seminars from leading experts in the world of sports history, the module will also include industry field visits to national sports clubs and governing bodies in the world of football, rugby, cricket, tennis and player unions.

Following completion of the Humanities of Sport module, the postgraduates will continue their studies after Christmas at the prestigious SDA Bocconi School of Management in Milan. Here the class will have the opportunity to study themes such as sports organisation and governance, sports strategy, sport finance and business planning. Various guest speakers and industry visits will also be arranged by the academic team in Italy.

In March 2012 the 12th edition class will move to Université de Neuchâtel, Switzerland, for the final Sports Law module. The legal implications of athlete and player contracts, marketing, financial fair play and doping will all be covered by Professorial experts from the Faculty of Law at the university and also from international federations and governing bodies who will be invited to contribute to the postgraduates learning experience  in this final module.

The course will conclude with the CIES hosting a special Final Projects conference in Neuchâtel for the postgraduates to present their final project research work to representatives from the academic and sports industry.

With academic field visits planned, but not limited to, leading organisations as diverse as the All England Lawn Tennis Club Wimbledon, Stadio San Siro in Milan, the International Olympic Committee, UEFA and FIFA in Switzerland, the Executive Board hope this will be a truly memorable experience and an important year in the educational development of the 12th edition postgraduates who will be the sports management professionals of the future.

On behalf of the CIES, De Montfort University, SDA Bocconi School of Management and Université de Neuchâtel, we all offer the CIES/FIFA Master 12th edition postgraduates a very warm welcome to the programme and wish them well on what we hope will be a challenging but highly rewarding journey to graduation and future membership of a global Alumni network.
