Conference by Dr Raffaele Poli on “The transfer market and fair pricing of footballers”

On 19th September at 18:15, Dr Raffaele Poli, who is responsible for the CIES Football Observatory, will host a conference named:

“The transfer market and fair pricing of footballers”

The event, which has been initiated by the University of Neuchâtel in collaboration with the Association of Students in Economics (SECOMANIA) and the Neuchâtel Society of Economics (SNSE), will address the subject of football player transfers.

During the conference, Dr Poli will present the work carried out within the CIES Football Observatory research group which is used to analyse the market for transfers of professional football players from an economic perspective. The first part will introduce the functioning of this particular market and explain the reasons behind the sharp increase in the sums at stake over the past decade. The second part will present the approach developed within the CIES Football Observatory to determine the fair price for footballers on the transfer market and will illustrate through case studies, different applications of the implemented methodology.

Since its creation in 2005, the CIES Football Observatory, which was founded by Dr Poli, has monitored player transfers through information published by clubs and the media. Today, the CIES Football Observatory has become a reference point in the demographic analysis of the football players’ labour market, the technical analysis of player performance and the scientific estimation of transfer values.
