Thursday 14th July 2011 was an important milestone in the academic development of the 28 postgraduate students of the 11th edition of the FIFA Master in Management, Law and Humanities of Sport. This was the date of the 2011 edition of the FIFA Master Final Projects conference.

Key figures from the world of academia and the sports industry gathered in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, for the special conference which is arranged by the CIES each year and is designed to allow the students to present their Final Project dissertation research to a wide number of specially invited guests.

FIFA Master Alumni were joined by leading sports industry professionals who represented organisations as diverse as the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Adidas, IMG, UEFA, FIFA, FIBA, TEAM Marketing, TSE Consulting, ECA , Street Football World and Saran Presents (India). The event also welcomed postgraduate family members.

Seven high quality presentations were made by the postgraduate groups. The first group discussed “African Football Realities: Moving towards a Club Licensing System” based on the success of the UEFA model in European Continent. It was followed by the “Internationalization of Sporting Events: the case of Giro d’ Italia” – a project that would later be awarded the “Alberto Madella Award” for the most outstanding Final Project following assessment from the FIFA Master Scientific Committee.

Following a mid?morning break the conference presentation resumed with an analysis of “Bidding: How can you win even if you lose? Identifying the legacies of lost bids to host a sports mega event.”

“Sports Fandom: What do Women Want? A Multi Sport Analysis of Female Fans” and “The Power of Music ? New forms of Sporting Events? “, were two highly original and informative research projects that followed the lunch interval.

The afternoon session next moved to consider the highly significant theme of, “Insuring the Future of Football: Creating a Uniform Health Insurance Scheme for Players.”

The event concluded with a highly original presentation which focussed on Brazil’s Favela’s and the project opportunities that could be explored in conjunction with the next two mega sporting events the country would be hosting. The presentation and project was called “Favela Olímpica: A Feasibility Study on the Organization of a Youth Inter-Favela Games”.

All of the project presentation groups were required to respond to a number of questions from the floor and asked to expand on particular themes in their projects. Click here to download the Executive Summaries.
