Lord's and Twickenham Welcome FIFA Master 14th Edition Class

On Monday 4th November 2013, the FIFA Master 14th edition field visit programme for the Humanities of Sport module concluded with London visits to the world famous Lord’s cricket ground and Twickenham rugby stadium.

The day began with a morning visit to Lord’s cricket ground – the spiritual home of cricket. Here, the FIFA Master postgraduates had the opportunity to learn about the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), which was founded in 1787, and why Lord’s is the ground that every cricketer dreams of playing the game. The visit included presentations on the history of Lord’s and how it maintains the important balance of preserving its fine traditions with the need to embrace modernization. The class, who are currently based in the International Centre for Sports History and Culture at De Montfort University, next had the chance to learn about the level of administrative support that is provided by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to the England Test team during both home and overseas tours.

Following a question and answer session, the postgraduates were able to view the famous Ashes urn that is competed for by the England and Australia Test teams before visiting the famous main pavilion Long Room, player dressing rooms and also the distinctive Lord’s media centre.

Following a quick journey across London, the class arrived at Twickenham stadium. Home of the England rugby union team, the stadium is one of the largest in England. Currently hosting a series of autumn international fixtures against Australia, Argentina and the New Zealand All Blacks, the FIFA Master class were able to tour this impressive venue, visit the World Rugby Museum and learn about the business aspects of the Rugby Football Union (RFU).

James Panter, who is the FIFA Master Humanities of Sport Module Co-ordinator said, “I would like to take this opportunity to thank Lord’s, the MCC, ECB and RFU at Twickenham for the making the FIFA Master class so welcome during the two visits. The opportunity to visit both venues and to meet with organisation representatives resulted in an extremely informative and enjoyable day.”
