“Olympic Agenda 2020: towards a new bidding model for the Olympic Games?”

The 127th IOC Session which took place in Monaco between the 8th and 9th December 2014, established the Olympic Agenda 2020 with its 40 recommendations to define the future vision of the Olympic Movement.

This strategic review supported the continued development of various areas, such as the Olympic Games bidding process, main competition programme, the reinforcement of good governance, ethical principles and the creation of an Olympic TV channel.

Taking into account the reluctance of certain countries to consider an Olympic Games host city bid, the Agenda 2020 puts forward many recommendations with the aim of making any application to the Olympic Games more attractive. It promotes the exploitation of existing infrastructures, the use of temporary facilities and helping to collaborate with projects of other regions, in order to ease Games organisation and lower costs.

The various recommendations of the Olympic Agenda 2020 have now been incorporated in the application procedure for the Olympic Games 2024. However, the implementation of these measures has raised many new questions. Are we heading for a new bidding process for the Olympic Games? Will these measures allow new cities to host this prestigious event?

It is in order to find answers to these questions that the CIES has decided to organise a round table, which gathers various specialists in this area. Their expertise will help to understand these changes and the influence of the Olympic Agenda 2020 on future Olympic bid applications.
