Spain: Chinese alumni makes a name for herself in social media

Tongtong Wu, an alumni from the FIFA/CIES Executive Programme in Sports Management (Curso Superior Universitario de Gestión del Deporte) organised in cooperation with Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (URJC) and the Real Federación Española de Fútbol (RFEF), has become a point of reference on Chinese sports social media. Tongtong Wu has been appointed as the Community Manager for the Spanish Premier League Club, Deportivo Alavés.

After completing a university curriculum focused on media (cinema, television and advertising) in China, Tongtong Wu chose to leave her homeland and to settle in Spain where she was able to study the local language. She then decided to focus on sport by attending the FIFA/CIES Executive Programme in Sports Management in Madrid, and then completing a Master’s Degree in Marketing. “It was really satisfying for me to take part in the FIFA/CIES Executive Programme. It allowed me to meet many great people. And it also opened the doors to football, where I work now”, she said.

Tongtong later joined the Baskiona-Alavés group for an internship devoted to activation of Chinese social media networks. Here she stayed to launch several major projects. In particular, she generated great interest from China by posting videos in which players from the Spanish football club conveyed season’s greetings in Chinese for traditional celebrations. She also co-ordinated the publication of various entertaining content which could be shared and enjoyed by fans around the world.

With some amusement, Tongtong comments that “The Chinese are not attracted only by the sporting performance of Spanish football players but also by their appearance…”. She also emphasises the success of the Deportivo Alavés match broadcasts, as the Chinese are particularly keen to watch Spanish league games.  For example, their recent match against Real Madrid was watched by almost a million viewers.

Fulfilled in her professional life, the young Chinese graduate is pleased that the social media profile of Deportivo Alavés has grown significantly in recent months, and sometimes outperforms the other leading Spanish clubs.

We send our best wishes to Tongtong for continued success both in Spain and in China!
