Live talk: New beginnings after the final whistle?

There comes a time when every footballer has to hang up their boots, but what will they do next? As part of the Connect series in our cultural programme, FIFA Museum ambassador Pascal Zuberbühler talks to former internationals about starting a new after calling time on their career.

Coach, sporting director, TV pundit – many ex-pros take the tried-and-trusted route of staying in the game once their playing days are over, while others try their hand at something totally different and leave the game completely. Whatever the decision, however, one thing is certain: a new career awaits.

In this exciting live talk, moderator and FIFA Museum ambassador Pascal Zuberbühler will be chatting to an array of high-profile guests: The participants of the first edition of an educational programme called The Next 90. The initiative was created by FIFA and the International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES) to help professional players prepare for life beyond the football pitch.

Alexi Lalas

Former defender Alexi Lalas is possibly one of the most famous faces of the US team at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the USA. His trademark was his long red hair and beard. He made a total of 96 appearances for the US men's national team and participated in two FIFA World Cups (1994 & 1998). He also played in two Olympic tournaments (1992 & 1996). Following his active career, Lalas was a manager for different MLS teams and a TV commentator. He also performs as a musician.

Josephine Henning 

At club level, Josephine Henning played for the top European teams Turbine Potsdam, VfL Wolfsburg, Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal and Olympique Lyonnais, among others. With these teams, she won the Champions League four times as well as numerous national championships and cup competitions. With the German national team, she won the European Championship and became an Olympic gold medallist. Nevertheless, she ended her active career as a footballer at the age of only 28 to become an artist. She has already exhibited at the FIFA Museum.

Matteo Tassi

Matteo is Head of Executive Education at the International Centre for Sports Studies - CIES.  In this capacity, he oversees CIES’ Executive Education activities: this includes programmes designed and delivered for FIFA such as The Football Executive Programme and The Next 90. He holds a PhD in Anthropological Sciences and Analysis of Cultural Changes. He has previously worked at The Olympic Museum in Lausanne, the International Council of Museums, and the football club Olympique Lyonnais.
