Current Position: Women Football Consultant at the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA)

Year of Graduation: 2020 (20th edition)

Nationality: Zimbabwean

What does your current role involve?

As the COSAFA Women Football Consultant, I am responsible for implementation of the women’s football strategy within the COSAFA region. I work closely with Women Football Officers / Managers from Member Associations and I design programmes, workshops and other capacity building programmes that help to develop the women’s game in the region. I also explore different actions that can be implemented in order to achieve the COSAFA Women’s Football strategy. I ensure all stated objectives are achieved and I conduct regular evaluation of the progress. I also provide support in different capacities when organizing tournaments which include General Coordination, Research and safeguarding training.

Before I joined COSAFA, I worked as a FIFA Women’s Football Expert and helped with the implementation of FIFA Women’s Development Programmes. One of the landmark projects I worked on included the FIFA Women’s League Development and FIFA Women’s Football Campaign projects which unlocked many opportunities for young girls and women in Uganda. After the launch of the FIFA Women’s Football Campaign in West Nile province of Uganda, interest to participate in football increased and there was also a rise in the number of schools taking part in football competitions after the launch of the project.

Which aspects of the FIFA Master course have helped you most in your career?

The FIFA Master is a very diverse community – which mirrors the sports industry itself. Learning to work within a diverse industry is one of the key skills that I gained during my year on the course and this is something which is a critical skill to have in the industry. I realised that it is always important to appreciate diverse communities, being able to adapt and also to appreciate other people's cultures. I believe this has been very helpful in my career.

The FIFA Master helped me to better understand the sports industry. Thanks to the lectures, field visits and interactions with guest speakers, I gained knowledge which I am now able to utilise in different situations. I also gained confidence to face different challenges. Since graduation, I have worked on different sports projects, both locally and internationally, including being a local expert for La Guilde and recently being appointed by the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee as a Commissioner of the Sport Education, Leadership, Research and Growth Commission with the main objective being to enhance sports education in Zimbabwe.

The FIFA Master broadened my world view and my knowledge of the sports industry. The programme has three main modules which are humanities, law and management and through the journey I realized just how important each aspect is to decision making within the industry. As a result, my perspective has been broadened and it has helped me to navigate some of the challenges that I have encountered in the industry.

What advice would you give to future students?

The FIFA Master is a great programme which helps you to understand the sports industry better. It can be a key stepping stone to those who would like to venture into the industry. Besides the academic experience, the programme unlocks vast networking opportunities through the FIFA Master Alumni Association as well as opportunities to interact with different sports industry experts. These networking opportunities are very useful in creating collaboration opportunities, knowledge sharing and employment opportunities. The FIFA Master program has been instrumental in my career advancement. Reflecting on my journey since graduation, the sheer number of opportunities that have opened up is astonishing. I firmly believe these doors would not have opened for me had I not pursued this qualification."
