On Tuesday 11th March 2025, CIES Director Prof. Denis Oswald, was awarded the order of Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur, at an official ceremony held at the French Embassy in Bern (Switzerland).

This prestigious distinction recognizes Prof. Oswald's sporting and academic achievements, as well as his commitment to sports administration and management, in keeping with the Olympic values advocated by Pierre de Coubertin.

Following a brilliant career as a rower, notably at the 1968, 1972 and 1976 Olympic Games (a medal and two diplomas), he became a recognized sports leader (President of World Rowing, ASOIF and member of the IOC Executive Board). He also established a strong reputation in the field of sports law, which he has taught at various universities, notably the Sorbonne-Paris. He also initiated a programme to improve ethics and governance in sports federations, and has been heavily involved in the fight against doping. This Légion d'Honneur also rewards a man who has always worked to promote the place of the French language and of France in international sport.

After the ceremony, Prof. Oswald said, “I am deeply honoured to receive this prestigious distinction. I share it with all those who have supported me in my various activities, in particular my colleagues and friends at CIES and in the Olympic Movement”.

Created in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte, the Légion d'Honneur is awarded to individuals, of French or foreign nationality, who have rendered outstanding services to the Nation, or who have embodied ideals of excellence in various fields.
