Leicester in Focus: Midway Milestones for the FIFA Master 25th Edition
It is unbelievable to think that month two of this tremendous journey has already been completed! Twenty-five individuals from all parts of the world have formed life-long friendships, engaged in thrilling discussions with our lecturers and guest speakers, and fostered intercontinental bonds through our shared love of sport as we continue with our Humanities of Sport module studies.
The famous quote “All roads lead to Rome” can be swapped for “All roads lead to Leicester”, as this city has allowed all of us to catch our favourite football clubs – not only Leicester City FC – but also around the country too. Tottenham v. West Ham and Manchester United v. Brentford are just too examples of games that were seen by our classmates during days off from study, allowing us to not only indulge in our passion for football, but also to experience the various local cuisines, history and cultures of these major cities around the United Kingdom.
The FIFA Master programme based at DMU’s International Centre for Sports History and Culture has itself also already provided us with some unforgettable moments. For example, the opportunity to meet and engage with Leicester City FC club legend and league cup winning captain, Matt Elliott, as he accompanied us on our visit to the LCFC Seagrave training ground. The tour gave us an inside look at the state-of-the-art facilities that are home to the first team and academy players, allowing our group to see first-hand the resources needed in developing youth footballers and the management needed to operate one of football’s most world-renowned training facilities. The fact that this field visit was topped by a chance meeting with the Foxes legend that is Jamie Vardy made this an even more special day for the group. Thank you to everyone at Leicester City FC who made this possible!
Back in the classroom, we are now wrapping up our Internationalisation of Sport sub-module studies which have fostered in-depth teachings to the games we admire around the world including Football in Ukraine and the former Yugoslavia, FIFA History, Sport in Asia and south America, and Olympic History. The programme has allowed us to intellectually debate and converse with some of the leading academic researchers working in these areas of sports history.
Prior to embarking on this adventure, none of us could have imagined the impact that these two months of teaching and discussions would have on our sporting perspective.
