Most training-reliant leagues
The 560th CIES Football Observatory Weekly Post ranks 50 top divisions worldwide according to the percentage of minutes played during the current season by footballers trained* by their club of employment. The Australian A-League (22.5%) leads the way ahead of Paraguay’s Copa de Primera, with the Danish Superliga and Argentina’s Primera División tied for third place.
Ranked sixth with almost 20% of minutes played by club-trained footballers, Spain’s La Liga has the highest proportion among the five major European leagues. Ranked 48th with just 5%, the English Premier League is at the other end of the scale. Only two leagues have lower figures than the English top-flight division : the Turkish Süper Lig and the Cypriot 1. Division.
The Post also highlights trends between the current season and the previous five, with figures generally showing a decline (38 leagues out of 50). The sharpest decrease was recorded in Colombia’s Dimayor (-6.5%), followed by Israel’s Ligat Ha’al and Chile’s Liga de Primera. Conversely, the largest increases were recorded in the Paraguayan and Venezuelan top divisions.
* Training clubs are defined as the first teams where players stayed for at least three years between the seasons in which they turned 15 and 21 (inclusive).
